Kia ora. I’m Helly, your host at About Thyme for Sleeps & Treats, a boutique short-stay accommodation just outside Alexandra in Central Otago. 

 A warm welcome, always
At About Thyme, hospitality means more than handing over keys. I love creating a stay that feels personal, relaxed and genuinely cared for, so guests feel they have found a quiet corner of Central Otago to call their own. 

 A natural host
I have always loved welcoming people into my home. Friends joke I should have done this years ago, because nobody leaves hungry and everyone is fussed over. From fresh bread to breakfast baskets, my instinct is to add just one more treat. It is simple, thoughtful hosting rather than anything fancy. 

 Why Central Otago
Central Otago grows on you quietly. Decades ago I was first introduced to the region and over time I discovered its big skies, stillness and sense of space. People choose to come here, and many return or even stay. Sharing this part of Alexandra with guests is one of the great joys of running our accommodation. 

 Creating something authentic
We designed About Thyme to reflect the romance of early railway travel while still offering modern comfort. Every detail of the railway carriage has been chosen carefully, so guests can enjoy a unique stay in Central Otago without feeling like they are roughing it. 

 Life beyond the carriage
Day to day I work from home as an indie author and publisher, while Rob runs his own business. The animals and lifestyle block keep us nicely occupied. Guests often enjoy hearing our stories, and we are always happy to chat if you are curious. Otherwise, we leave you in peace. 

 A place to slow down
Many guests come for the Rail Trail, others for wineries or simply rest. We are here when you need local tips, directions or suggestions, and we happily step back when you want solitude. This is accommodation designed for calm, not chaos.
